I’m taking my 15 year old son to DMV to take his learner’s permit test. Should be a happy day for him EXCEPT - he has a very bad grade in one of his classes and some bad behavior as of late. This means no driving until those two things change. But letting him get thenough permit so he has hope and a carrot to reach for. He is very pissed at me these days (his phone is no more due to these issues, which is torture for today’s teens.)

Here is a boat I am looking at to distract from the misery of parenting a teen.

even my R/C boats are proof of the adage that a boat is a hole in the water you throw money into.

Careful with bestowing you love of cars on him, this is what you’ll have to look forward to in about 5 years once he gets a well-paying internship and has a little spending money for junk. Not pictured: my BMW 3-series(in the driveway as usual), my mom’s Lexus RX and my Dad’s Acura MDX, both evicted when the 4Runner and Alfa were both broken. My dad understood and was okay with parking outside for the summer when he allowed me to purchase the Alfa(he had almost as much fun as I did with my project) but kicking my mom out was a bit of a no-no

That price is heavily dependent on a number of things the seller didn’t mention or take a picture of.

Is the interior in good shape? No? That’s $4000-7000 to re-upholster.

Electronics in good working order? No? Another $2000-$5000 depending.

Does the engine have good compression? Maintenance records? Properly Winterized?

Trim system functional?

Lower unit in good condition?

Any cracks in the fiberglass? Bubbles? Need a new gel-coat?

How is the wood? Needs refinishing?

It could be a great deal, or it could cost another $15-17k to get everything right.

I have two teens now. Other than the regular teenage angst about all things social, it hasn’t been too bad so far*. They are already accustomed to rigid parental controls on their devices. Internet goes off at 8:00. If they need more time, they have to ask. If they miss homework or bring home a bad grade, their devices disappear until their grades improve.

*knocks vigorously on nearest piece of wood.

Yeah but that’s true of pretty much RC anything. My RC truck is a money pit, but luckily the pit is scale too.

I’m glad you’re making the sincere efforts of discipline and that it sucks.

My in-laws are dealing with hell with their now 18 year old. just totaled his second truck, stealing from them, drugs, suicide risks, it’s never ending with that kid. All while yelling that he’s an adult and a man now.

Good luck and stay at him. Everyone’s an asshole between 16-21

My Slash has been nothing but a cash suck.

I’ve put off getting a new shell and new wheels and tires which it needs

Well I am sorry about your kid.

If you are serious about looking at boats. You MUST run them to check the engine. Use flusher muffs to attach a hose to an outboard. I would stay away from inboard-outboards, they usually have the most issues. Outboards are the easiest to work on, but inboards can be just as nice. Check the bilge and see if there is evidence of lots of water or growth in it. Check the chain locker for the same issues. Look for stress cracks in the fiberglass and clips where the boat come up on the trailer. Make sure the hull has a good coating on it before putting it in the water.

This particular example looks okay from the images, but I can see the wood hasn’t been taken care of. Most likely years of sitting uncovered in the sun means all that railing, steps, flooring, and swim deck need to be replaced because a lot of the time you can’t bring back rotten wood. That swim deck looks really bad. Some reason it is warped up on one side, which should not be possible unless the stainless rods have been bent too or its rotted away from the bolts holding it down. Boats are a big investment, especially cheap one. I wouldn’t say CP, but I would say you’ll spend more money and time than you were expecting on that particular example.

Old adage, “The definition of a boat is a hole in the water surrounded by wood, into which someone pours money.”

As a high school teacher I have overheard all kinds of driving privilege related complaints from students about their parents but one stands out as extremely effective for the particular student.

Instead of taking his keys and grounding him for the infraction they turned him into their personal assistant and errand runner. So he was constantly running to the store and picking up or dropping off his siblings at practice.

The complaint I heard from him was declining a social outing with his peers since his siblings had practice and he had drive them around while his parents relaxed at home. I chuckled to myself and made a mental note to check in with his parents later in the day. For the rest of the year I don’t remember them having any other issues with him keeping his priorities in order.

This is good parenting, right here.

As for boats, I find the best one to use is one that belongs to someone else.
